Western astrology
Personality, not prediction
Read moreHORA is rooted in the Western psychological tradition — the chart as a map of who you are, not what will happen to you. Western astrology focuses on character, inner dynamics, and psychological patterns rather than fate or karmic destiny.
Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac and is primarily focused on prediction and karma. Both are valid, but they produce different charts and different kinds of readings. HORA is built entirely within the Western tradition.
Tropical zodiac
Anchored to the seasons
Read moreThe tropical zodiac places Aries at the spring equinox every year, regardless of where the stars physically sit. It is anchored to the seasons — the relationship between Earth and Sun — not to the constellations themselves.
The sidereal zodiac is anchored to the actual star positions. Due to a wobble in Earth's axis called precession, the two zodiacs have drifted about 23° apart — which is why a Vedic chart can show your Sun in a different sign. HORA uses tropical.
Placidus house system
Timed to your exact birth
Read morePlacidus divides the sky into 12 unequal houses based on the Earth's rotation at your exact birth time and location. No two birth charts from different times or places produce the same house structure — this is what makes Placidus so personal and precise.
Whole sign houses assign one entire zodiac sign to each house, making every house exactly 30°. If another app uses Whole Sign and HORA uses Placidus, a planet near a house boundary can appear in a completely different house. Both are correct under their own system.
Apparent geocentric
The sky as you actually see it
Read moreApparent geocentric calculates planet positions from Earth's perspective with a correction for atmospheric refraction. The atmosphere bends light as it enters, which means a planet near the horizon appears slightly higher than it actually is. HORA corrects for this — giving you the most accurate view of the sky as it appeared at your birth.
True geocentric uses the same Earth-centred viewpoint without the refraction correction. The difference is a fraction of a degree — but for precise chart work it matters. Apparent geocentric is the standard used by most serious astrology platforms.
